Tom Marvolo Riddle was born on December 31, 1926, at Wool's Orphanage in London. His mother, Merope Gaunt, was the last descendant of Salazar Slytherin, and his father, Tom Riddle Sr., was a wealthy Muggle whom Merope ensnared with a love potion. When the potion wore off, Riddle Sr. abandoned her. Merope died shortly after childbirth, leaving Tom to grow up in the orphanage. He exhibited early signs of magical ability, using his powers to terrorize other children and control his environment. In 1938, Professor Albus Dumbledore visited the orphanage and informed Tom that he was a wizard, offering him a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

At Hogwarts, Tom was sorted into Slytherin and quickly distinguished himself as a brilliant, charismatic student. He discovered his Slytherin heritage and became obsessed with his lineage, delving into Dark Magic and the legend of the Chamber of Secrets. He opened the Chamber in 1943, resulting in the death of Moaning Myrtle, and framed Hagrid for the crime. After Hogwarts, he worked briefly at Borgin and Burkes, then disappeared for a decade, traveling the world and studying Dark Magic. He returned to request the Defense Against the Dark Arts teaching post from Dumbledore, but was refused. In the 1970s, he gathered followers, the Death Eaters, and launched a reign of terror, culminating in his first downfall on October 31, 1981, when the Killing Curse rebounded off the infant Harry Potter.[edit]

Voldemort is defined by an insatiable lust for power and a pathological fear of death. He is cold, calculating, and utterly devoid of empathy or love. His charisma and intelligence allow him to manipulate others, but he trusts no one and views followers as expendable tools. He is deeply arrogant, believing himself superior to all other wizards, and is incapable of understanding concepts like loyalty, sacrifice, or friendship. His obsession with pure-blood supremacy stems from his desire to distance himself from his Muggle father. Voldemort's story is one of a static descent into evil, with no redemption. After his initial defeat in 1981, he spent years as a disembodied spirit, possessing animals and Quirrell before regaining a rudimentary body. In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, he is fully resurrected using Harry's blood, the bone of his father, and the flesh of Peter Pettigrew. He then launches the Second Wizarding War, taking over the Ministry of Magic and hunting Harry. Throughout the series, he pursues the Elder Wand, believing it will make him invincible. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, he kills Severus Snape, unaware that Snape's death does not transfer the wand's allegiance. During the final Battle of Hogwarts, Harry reveals he is the true master of the Elder Wand. Voldemort casts the Killing Curse, but the wand refuses to kill its master, and the spell rebounds, killing him permanently. His body lies in the Great Hall, mortal and ordinary.[edit]

He consistently ranks high on lists of iconic antagonists, often placed alongside Darth Vader and Hannibal Lecter. Fans and critics praise his chilling backstory, his serpentine design in the films, and Ralph Fiennes's performance. The trope of 'He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named' has entered popular culture, parodied in shows like The Simpsons and Family Guy. Academically, Voldemort is analyzed as a symbol of fascism, racism, and the dangers of authoritarianism.
