Scipio Africanus is consistently ranked among history's greatest military commanders, alongside Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar. He is the only Roman general to have decisively defeated Hannibal in a pitched battle, a feat that ended the Second Punic War and established Rome as the dominant Mediterranean power. His flawless battlefield record, with no recorded defeats, and his innovative tactics at Ilipa and Zama are still studied in military academies today. His legacy as the conqueror of Carthage has endured for over two millennia.

AwardsAncient Rome did not have formal awards ceremonies. Scipio's honors included the honorific name Africanus (c. 201 BC), a Roman Triumph, election as Censor (199 BC), and a second Consulship (194 BC). These were the highest civic and military distinctions of the Roman Republic.
