Kocsis's record is built on efficiency rather than volume of matches. He scored 75 goals in 68 caps, a 1.10 average second only to Puskás for Hungary, and his 1.103 goals-per-game average is the best among players with more than 43 caps in FIFA class-A competition, ahead of Gerd Müller and Puskás. At the 1954 World Cup he scored 11 goals, a single-tournament record at the time, and became the first player to score two hat-tricks in one World Cup. He holds the Hungarian record with seven international hat-tricks and scored 23 goals for Hungary in calendar year 1954, the most by any player in a single year.
