Ryuichi Sakamoto's achievements span pop, classical, and film music. He was the first Japanese composer to win an Academy Award, and his score for The Last Emperor earned him a career grand slam of Oscar, BAFTA, Golden Globe, and Grammy. His single "Energy Flow" became Japan's first instrumental number-one. He was also recognized for his environmental activism and cultural contributions, receiving France's Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
