Robbie Jansen

Robbie Jansen's legacy is defined by his transformative impact on South African music rather than traditional trophy counts. He is universally acknowledged as a foundational figure in Cape Jazz, a genre he helped define through his innovative fusion of Zulu rhythms and urban jazz. His work with Juluka stands as a historic example of artistic resistance against apartheid, earning him the title of "national treasure" from the South African government and cultural institutions. Although he did not accumulate a shelf full of international awards, his induction into the collective memory of South African music history is unparalleled. His influence extends beyond his lifetime, with his recordings continuing to inspire new generations of musicians and scholars.
