Richard Courant's greatest accolade is the institution that bears his name: the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University, one of the world's foremost centers for applied mathematics and computer science. His textbooks, especially What is Mathematics? and Methods of Mathematical Physics, have been used by generations of students and remain in print. The finite element method, which he pioneered, is a fundamental tool in engineering and physics. These achievements represent a lasting impact that few mathematicians have matched.

Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences named after him
The institute he founded was renamed in his honor in 1951.
Records & Feats
First to apply the finite element method to solve a torsion problem
In 1943, Courant used piecewise linear interpolation on triangles to solve a torsion problem, a precursor to the modern finite element method.
