Red Callender

Red Callender's legacy rests on his extraordinary session work. He was a charter member of The Wrecking Crew, the legendary Los Angeles studio collective that played on countless hits. He was one of the first African American musicians to break the color barrier in Hollywood's commercial recording studios. His versatility on bass and tuba made him a first-call player for decades. He taught Charles Mingus, who would become one of jazz's most influential bassists. His co-written hit "Primrose Lane" remains a classic.
