Ralph Bakshi's career is defined by his role as a pioneer of adult-oriented independent animation. He directed the first X-rated animated feature, Fritz the Cat, which still holds the record as the most successful independent animated feature ever. His adaptation of The Lord of the Rings won the Golden Gryphon and directly inspired Peter Jackson's later trilogy. The Annie Award for Distinguished Contribution to the Art of Animation recognized his lasting impact on the medium. Bakshi's work on Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures gave creative freedom to a generation of animators who shaped the 1990s animation renaissance.
