Sultan Qaitbay's achievements are etched into the stone of Egypt itself. As the eighteenth Sultan of the Burji dynasty, he stabilized a fracturing state and defended it against powerful neighbors like the Ottomans and Portuguese. His architectural legacy includes two masterpieces: the Citadel of Qaitbay in Alexandria, built on the site of the ancient Lighthouse, and his own mausoleum in Cairo, a jewel of Mamluk design. Historians regard his reign as the last golden age of the Mamluks, a period of peace and prosperity that preceded the empire's eventual fall. His ability to rise from slavery to become a revered ruler remains a unique feat in history.
