Science teacher Ryland Grace wakes up on a spaceship light years from home with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: solve the riddle of the mysterious substance causing the sun to die out. Ryland Grace is a junior high school science teacher with a background in biochemistry who wakes up alone on a spacecraft far from Earth, with no memory of who he is, how he got there, or why he is the only conscious person on board. As he recovers from amnesia, he starts to piece together his identity and realizes he is on a desperate mission tied to a global crisis on Earth: the Sun is losing energy because of a mysterious microscopic organism called astrophage that is feeding on it.

The story's central conflict is both scientific and existential. Earth is facing a civilization-ending environmental collapse because the Sun's output is being drained, and Ryland is part of a last-ditch international effort to identify the cause and find a solution before humanity is wiped out. He is not a stereotypical action hero; instead, he is an ordinary educator whose value lies in intuition, scientific creativity, and the ability to think across disciplines. That makes him an unusual but fitting choice for a mission that depends on understanding something no one has ever seen before.

As his memories return in fragments, Ryland learns that the mission was not supposed to be a one-man job in any normal sense. He had been recruited by Eva Stratt, the formidable head of the global response effort, after a controversial paper of his suggested that life might survive in radically different environments than Earth's. Stratt sees something in his thinking that others miss, and she pushes him into the project because the world no longer has time for polite consensus or academic caution. This gives the film a dual structure: present-tense survival aboard the ship, and flashback-driven revelations about how Ryland came to be there in the first place.

On the ship, Ryland faces immediate practical problems. He has to learn the vessel's systems, understand the mission's scientific equipment, and survive physically and psychologically in deep space while slowly recovering access to his own memories. The movie builds tension through problem-solving rather than combat. Each new piece of information sharpens the stakes: the crisis is bigger than Earth, the mission is more dangerous than it first appeared, and Ryland is more alone than he thought.

The film also emphasizes the loneliness of interstellar science. Much of the suspense comes from Ryland having to infer what happened from clues rather than direct explanations, and from the possibility that success may require sacrifices he is not prepared for.
