Step into the shoes of a Tokyo high school student who becomes a phantom thief. Persona 5 is a 2016 role-playing game developed by P-Studio and published by Atlus. It launched for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 in Japan on September 15, 2016, and worldwide on April 4, 2017. The game blends traditional turn-based combat with social simulation. Players explore dungeons called Palaces, fight Shadows, and summon Personas, manifestations of their inner psyche. Set in modern-day Tokyo, the story follows Joker, a student on probation after being framed for assault. He joins other misfits to form the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, a vigilante group that enters the Metaverse, a supernatural realm born from humanity's desires. Their goal: steal the corrupt intentions of adults and force them to confess their crimes. Persona 5 splits its time between daily life in Tokyo and supernatural dungeon crawling. Each day is a resource: you choose how to spend your afternoons and evenings, whether studying for exams, working part-time at a convenience store, fishing at the shrine, or building bonds with Confidants. These relationships unlock new abilities and Persona fusion options. At night, you enter Palaces, handcrafted dungeons representing a target's distorted desires. Combat is turn-based with a focus on exploiting weaknesses. Hitting an enemy's weak point knocks them down and grants a bonus turn via the 1 More system. Down all enemies and you can trigger an All-Out Attack, a stylish team finisher. You can also negotiate with Shadows to recruit them as Personas, then fuse multiple Personas in the Velvet Room to create stronger ones. The game's UI is famously flashy, with menus that slide, pulse, and explode in red and black. Joker is a high schooler on probation after trying to stop a drunk man from assaulting a woman. Sent to Tokyo, he lives above LeBlanc, a quiet café run by Sojiro Sakura. One day, he stumbles into the Metaverse, a parallel world shaped by human desires. There he awakens Arsène, his Persona, and teams up with Ryuji Sakamoto, a fellow delinquent, and Ann Takamaki, a model targeted by a predatory teacher. They form the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, stealing treasures from Palaces to force corrupt adults to confess. The targets range from a abusive volleyball coach to a yakuza-connected art molester. As the group grows, they uncover a conspiracy reaching the prime minister, Masayoshi Shido, who framed Joker. The story builds to a heist on Shido's Palace, then the reveal of a godlike entity, Yaldabaoth, controlling humanity through apathy.
