Between 1925 and 1945, Stern was nominated for the Nobel Prize 82 times, more than Einstein (62), Planck (59), and Bohr (46). Only Arnold Sommerfeld (84 nominations) received more.
First measurement of the proton's magnetic moment
In 1931, Stern and Estermann measured the proton's magnetic moment at 2.5 nuclear magnetons, contradicting the Dirac theory and revealing internal structure of the proton.
First direct experimental evidence of space quantization
The Stern-Gerlach experiment (1922) demonstrated that atomic magnetic moments are quantized, providing the first direct evidence for electron spin.
