Orochimaru

Orochimaru grew up an orphan in Konohagakure, his parents killed during a shinobi war. Visiting their grave one day, he encountered Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Hokage, who noticed a snake nearby and remarked that snakes symbolize good fortune and rebirth. That casual comment planted a seed in the young Orochimaru's mind, setting him on a lifelong quest to unlock the secrets of life through forbidden jutsu.

He graduated from the academy as a prodigy and was placed on a team with Tsunade Senju and Jiraiya under Hiruzen's guidance. The three became legendary shinobi, earning the title Sannin from Hanzo of the Salamander during the Second Great Ninja War. But even then, Orochimaru's obsession with immortality and his cruel experiments were already surfacing. When Konoha discovered he had been conducting unethical experiments on fellow citizens, he defected rather than face judgment. He briefly joined the Akatsuki but was forced out for his sadistic research and lust for Uchiha powers. He then established Otogakure, the Hidden Sound Village, using its shinobi as test subjects. Orochimaru is cold, calculating, and utterly devoid of empathy. He views people as tools or containers for his research, showing no remorse for the lives he destroys. His defining trait is an insatiable thirst for knowledge, particularly the mechanics of life and death, which he pursues with a scientist's detachment. He is patient and manipulative, willing to wait years to achieve his goals, as seen in his slow seduction of Sasuke Uchiha. Despite his monstrous actions, he possesses a twisted charisma and a calm, almost playful demeanor that unnerves allies and enemies alike. Orochimaru first emerges as a major threat during the Chunin Exams, where he masterminds the invasion of Konoha in disguise as a sound ninja and later the Fourth Kazekage. He kills the Third Hokage in combat, forcing Hiruzen to sacrifice himself with the Dead Demon Consuming Seal. The invasion fails, but Orochimaru escapes.

He then turns his attention to Sasuke Uchiha, planting a cursed seal on him during the exams and manipulating him over years to defect from Konoha. Sasuke eventually comes to Orochimaru for training, but after three years, Orochimaru attempts to take over his body. Sasuke turns the tables, absorbing Orochimaru into himself and effectively killing him. Orochimaru later revives during the Fourth Great Ninja War when Kabuto Yakushi uses his cells to perform the Reanimation Jutsu. After the war, Orochimaru is allowed to continue his research under surveillance.

By the time of Boruto, he has undergone a surprising transformation. Seeing his own flawed path mirrored in Kabuto, he shifts his focus from manipulating life to fostering it. He creates two artificial humans from his DNA, the younger of whom, Mitsuki, he sends to live in Konoha as a ninja, encouraging him to find his own purpose. Orochimaru consistently ranks in the top twenty in official Naruto fan polls. Critics and fans alike praise him as one of the series' best villains, noting his unapologetic evil and lack of redeeming qualities. Fans often describe his presence as chilling and his dialogue as consistently excellent, "there isn't a single bad line written for Orochimaru," one Reddit user noted.
