Nirmala Sitharaman

Nirmala Sitharaman, born on 18 August 1959 in Madurai, is an Indian economist and politician who has been the minister of finance and corporate affairs since 2019. She made history as the first woman to hold the defence and finance portfolios full-time. A member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), she has represented Karnataka in the Rajya Sabha since July 2016. Sitharaman's academic path began with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College in 1980, followed by a Master of Arts in Economics and an M.Phil from Jawaharlal Nehru University in 1984. After a stint in the United Kingdom, she returned to India and served on the National Commission for Women from 2003 to 2005.
