Nikolai Leskov's greatest accolade is the lasting esteem of his peers and posterity. Maxim Gorky declared himself a student of Leskov and placed him in the pantheon of Russian literature alongside Pushkin, Gogol, and Tolstoy. Anton Chekhov called him a teacher. Walter Benjamin's influential essay 'The Storyteller' (1936) elevated Leskov to global prominence, and Britannica hails him as 'the greatest of Russian storytellers.' His works have never gone out of print, and his innovative skaz technique continues to influence writers and scholars.
