Naruto Uzumaki is a 12-year-old orphan living in Konohagakure, the Hidden Leaf Village. Unbeknownst to him, the village's former leader, the Fourth Hokage, sealed the Nine-Tailed Fox inside him at the cost of his own life. Because of this, the villagers treat Naruto as a pariah, leaving him desperate for recognition. His dream is to become Hokage so that everyone will finally acknowledge him.

Naruto graduates from the Ninja Academy and is assigned to Team 7 alongside Sasuke Uchiha, the last survivor of the Uchiha clan after his brother Itachi massacred them, and Sakura Haruno, a bright girl with a crush on Sasuke. Their mentor is Kakashi Hatake, a masked jonin known for his strict methods and mysterious past. The team's first serious mission takes them to the Land of Waves, where they battle the rogue ninja Zabuza Momochi and his apprentice Haku. This fight forces Naruto to tap into the Nine-Tails' power for the first time.

The story expands during the Chunin Exams, a tournament where genin from allied villages compete for promotion. Here, Naruto meets rivals like Rock Lee, Neji Hyuga, and Gaara from the Hidden Sand Village. The exams are interrupted by a coordinated invasion led by Orochimaru, a rogue ninja who kills the Third Hokage. In the chaos, Naruto trains under Jiraiya, one of the legendary Three Ninja, and learns the Rasengan, a technique that becomes his signature move.

Meanwhile, Sasuke becomes consumed by revenge against Itachi and defects from the village to seek power from Orochimaru. Naruto, along with a team of fellow genin including Shikamaru, Neji, and Choji, pursues Sasuke in the Sasuke Retrieval arc. The chase culminates in a fierce battle at the Valley of the End, where Naruto and Sasuke fight to a standstill. Naruto fails to bring Sasuke back, and the series ends with Naruto leaving the village with Jiraiya for two and a half years of training, setting up the sequel Naruto Shippuden.[edit]
