Spider-Verse
In 2018, Sony Pictures Animation took a gamble on a concept that had never been tried in mainstream animation: a Spider-Man movie built around Miles Morales, a half-Black, half-Puerto Rican teenager from Brooklyn, and a multiverse full of alternate versions of the web-slinger. The result, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and grossed $384 million worldwide against a $90 million budget. It also changed the visual language of animated films, borrowing halftone dots, Ben-Day dots, and onomatopoeic text straight from comic book pages.
Five years later, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse expanded the canvas with over 240 distinct Spider-People, a story that splits across dimensions, and an ambitious cliffhanger that redefines what a sequel can do. Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson, the film grossed over $690 million worldwide and earned a Best Animated Feature Oscar nomination. The series' third chapter, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is scheduled for release in 2027.
The franchise stands out not just for its technical innovation but for its emotional depth. It tackles identity, grief, destiny, and the courage to write your own story, all while honoring the decades-long Spider-Man mythos. With a diverse cast led by Shameik Moore as Miles, the films have made Miles Morales a cultural icon and have influenced the broader superhero genre, from Spider-Man: No Way Home to the live-action Spider-Man films.

Miles Morales is a typical Brooklyn teenager, juggling the pressure of an elite boarding school and the expectations of his father, police officer Jefferson Davis. But when a radioactive spider from another dimension bites him during a graffiti session with his uncle Aaron, his life turns upside down. He gains powers he can't control and soon witnesses the death of his universe's Peter Parker, who leaves him a USB drive containing data to shut down Kingpin's particle accelerator.
Miles teams up with an older, weary Peter B. Parker from another dimension, who reluctantly agrees to train him. Soon, more Spider-People arrive: Gwen Stacy, Spider-Man Noir, Spider-Ham, Peni Parker, and others. Kingpin, still grieving the loss of his family, plans to reactivate the collider to access parallel universes, risking the destruction of the city. Miles must learn to control his powers and embrace his role as Spider-Man, even as he doubts whether he can live up to the legacy.
The emotional core of the first film is Miles's relationship with his uncle Aaron, who is revealed to be the Prowler. Aaron's death forces Miles to confront his own identity and ultimately take a leap of faith, using his unique abilities to defeat Kingpin and send his new allies back to their home dimensions.
In Across the Spider-Verse, Miles is now a seasoned hero, but he's haunted by the fear of losing his family. He faces a new threat: the Spot, a former scientist whose body has become a portal-riddled mess after the events of the first film. Meanwhile, Gwen Stacy has joined the Spider Society, an interdimensional organization led by Miguel O'Hara, a.k.a. Spider-Man 2099, dedicated to maintaining the stability of the multiverse.
Miles learns that his very existence as Spider-Man is considered a canon anomaly, a violation of the rules that keep the multiverse intact. When Miguel reveals that Miles's father is destined to die, Miles refuses to accept it, sparking a chase across dimensions. He ends up on Earth-42, a universe where his father is dead and his uncle Aaron is alive. There, he discovers that Earth-42's Miles has become the Prowler, a villain. The film ends with Miles trapped in this alternate reality, facing an evil version of himself, while Gwen rallies his allies to mount a rescue.
The third film, Beyond the Spider-Verse, is expected to resolve this cliffhanger, with Miles fighting to get home and save his family against all odds.
