    Overview

Released in 2007, Spider-Man 3 marked the conclusion of Sam Raimi's original trilogy, placing Peter Parker in a period of triumph. The city celebrates him, and he's ready to propose to Mary Jane Watson, whose own acting career is taking off. This idyllic phase, however, is short-lived, as new threats begin to emerge, testing Peter's resolve and his relationships.

The first major challenge comes from Harry Osborn, driven by a thirst for revenge over his father's death. He confronts Peter using advanced weaponry, but a battle injury leads to Harry's amnesia, temporarily setting aside his vendetta. Meanwhile, a criminal named Flint Marko experiences a freak accident at a particle accelerator, transforming him into the Sandman, a formidable foe with control over sand. It's later revealed that Marko was directly responsible for Uncle Ben's death, adding a personal layer to Peter's struggle.

Adding to Peter's troubles is an extraterrestrial black symbiote that bonds with his suit. This alien entity amplifies his powers but also fuels his darker emotions, bringing out arrogance and aggression. This transformation strains his relationship with Mary Jane, who is facing her own career setbacks. The symbiote eventually finds a new host in Eddie Brock, a resentful photographer, who becomes the menacing Venom. Peter must confront these villains and his own inner darkness to protect those he loves.

Peter Parker is enjoying his life as Spider-Man, with the city cheering his name and his relationship with Mary Jane Watson blossoming. He's even planning to propose. His happiness is threatened when Harry Osborn, still seeking vengeance for his father Norman's death, attacks Peter. During their fight, Harry is injured and loses his memory, forgetting his animosity towards Peter.

At the same time, escaped convict Flint Marko is involved in an accident at a scientific facility. He falls into a particle accelerator, which merges his body with sand, turning him into the Sandman. He begins using his new powers for criminal activities. Peter eventually learns from Captain Stacy that Sandman was the one who actually killed Uncle Ben, with Dennis Carradine being just an accomplice. This revelation fuels Peter's anger.

A major turning point occurs when a black, alien symbiote crashes to Earth via a meteorite and attaches itself to Peter's Spider-Man suit. The symbiote enhances Peter's abilities but also amplifies his negative emotions, making him more aggressive, arrogant, and self-centered. This change causes him to mistreat Mary Jane, who is struggling with her own career. She finds comfort in Harry, who has recovered his memory and is manipulated by his father's spirit into believing Peter is responsible for Norman's death.

Harry confronts Peter, and their rivalry escalates into a full-blown battle. The symbiote, sensing Peter's anger, eventually abandons him and attaches itself to Eddie Brock, a photographer who despises Peter. Under the symbiote's influence, Brock transforms into Venom, a monstrous entity with powers similar to Spider-Man's but with a darker edge. Venom and Sandman team up, targeting Peter and Mary Jane. Peter, realizing the destructive influence of the symbiote, seeks help from Harry, who has a change of heart and agrees to assist him. Together, they must face Venom and Sandman to save the city and protect Mary Jane.

    Critical Consensus

While visually impressive and action-packed, Spider-Man 3 suffers from an overstuffed plot with too many villains. Its narrative struggles to balance the multiple storylines, leading to a less focused and cohesive conclusion for the trilogy.

The film tries to juggle too many threads, resulting in a chaotic and often muddled narrative.
