On a distant planet, a young hedgehog named Sonic lives with his guardian Longclaw, a wise owl who warns him to hide his incredible speed from those who would exploit it. When a group of warriors attacks their home, Longclaw gives Sonic a bag of golden rings that can open portals to other dimensions. She uses one to send him to Earth, sacrificing herself to protect him. Sonic lands in the small town of Green Hills, Montana, where he spends the next ten years living in secret, observing the townspeople from his hidden cave.

Now a teenager, Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) is lonely but has grown attached to the local sheriff, Tom Wachowski (James Marsden), and his wife Maddie (Tika Sumpter), a veterinarian. Sonic passes the time by racing at superhuman speeds, playing baseball alone, and secretly helping the townsfolk. One night, feeling isolated and frustrated, he unleashes his speed in an emotional outburst, accidentally creating an electromagnetic pulse that knocks out power across the entire Pacific Northwest.

The energy surge catches the attention of Dr. Ivo Robotnik (Jim Carrey), a brilliant but unhinged government scientist who sees Sonic as the key to unlimited power. Robotnik arrives in Green Hills with his fleet of floating drones and his nervous assistant Agent Stone (Lee Majdoub), determined to capture the source. Sonic realizes he is no longer safe and decides to leave Earth, only to discover his rings are running low on power. He sneaks into Tom's garage to recharge, but Tom discovers him. In the chaos, Sonic accidentally drops one of his rings into a portal that sends it to San Francisco.

Tom, initially terrified, agrees to help Sonic get to San Francisco to retrieve the ring and escape. Their road trip becomes the heart of the film, with Sonic experiencing the human world for the first time. He eats at a diner, watches movies, and learns about friendship from Tom, who is himself preparing to move to San Francisco for a job with the police department. Along the way, they encounter a bar fight, a run-in with Tom's skeptical sister-in-law Rachel (Natasha Rothwell), and a growing bond that makes Sonic question whether he really wants to leave Earth behind.

Meanwhile, Robotnik transforms his lab into a mobile command center and relentlessly pursues them using advanced technology. He pieces together clues from Sonic's quills and energy signatures, closing in on the pair as they race toward San Francisco. The journey tests Sonic's trust in humans and forces Tom to reconsider his own dreams, setting the stage for a final confrontation atop the Transamerica Pyramid.[edit]
