Maimonides's legacy rests on a staggering body of work. His fourteen-volume Mishneh Torah, a comprehensive codification of Jewish law, still carries enormous authority, and his thirteen principles of faith have shaped Jewish belief for centuries. His writings on halakha and ethics were celebrated by Jewish communities as far away as Iraq and Yemen, and he rose to lead the Jewish community in Egypt. Yet he also faced sharp criticism, particularly from scholars in Spain. Beyond Judaism, Maimonides was a key figure in the Islamic Golden Age; influenced by Aristotle, al-Farabi, Ibn Sina, and his contemporary Ibn Rushd, his philosophical and scientific contributions were highly regarded across the Muslim world. His era is often seen as the end of the Jewish Golden Age in Spain, though some argue it lasted until the Christian Reconquista in the fifteenth century. Today, Maimonides stands as one of the most prolific and influential Torah scholars of the Middle Ages, a polymath whose work bridged faith and reason.
