Monkey D. Luffy

Monkey D. Luffy was born on May 5 in Windmill Village on Dawn Island in the East Blue. As a young boy, he idolized the pirate Shanks, who was based in the village. Luffy repeatedly begged to join Shanks's crew, but was always refused for being too young and reckless. One day, Luffy ate a Devil Fruit from Shanks's ship — the Gum-Gum Fruit — which gave his body rubber-like properties but cursed him to never be able to swim. Shanks saved Luffy from a sea monster, losing his left arm in the process. Before leaving the village, Shanks gave Luffy his treasured straw hat, asking Luffy to return it someday after becoming a great pirate.
