Montaigne's greatest accolade is the invention of the essay form itself, a genre that has shaped Western literature for over four centuries. His influence extends to writers as diverse as Shakespeare, Emerson, Nietzsche, and countless modern essayists. Ralph Waldo Emerson placed him among history's great thinkers in his 1850 work Representative Men, alongside Plato and Shakespeare. Montaigne's skepticism influenced Descartes and Pascal, and his open-ended questioning helped steer Western thought toward anti-authoritarian inquiry.
