Li Hongzhi

Li Hongzhi's record is not measured in trophies. He built a movement from a single teaching session in Changchun in 1992 into a global community with a performing arts company, a media network, and a headquarters in New York State, all while leading it from exile after the Chinese government banned the practice in 1999. That trajectory, from a state grain depot worker to the head of one of the most recognizable religious movements to emerge from China in modern times, is the achievement his followers point to. His influence shows in the movement's persistence through decades of suppression and in the reach of Shen Yun's international tours. The recognition he receives is devotional and institutional rather than ceremonial: no Hall of Fame, no lifetime achievement award, no national honor. What he has instead is a following that has outlasted the campaign to eliminate it.
