Records

Mizoguchi's three Venice Film Festival awards in consecutive years remain a rare achievement. He is consistently ranked among the greatest directors in cinema history. In 2012, Sight & Sound critics' poll placed Ugetsu at number 54 and Sansho the Bailiff at number 75 on the list of the greatest films ever made. His work continues to be restored and celebrated internationally.

AwardsMizoguchi won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1952 for The Life of Oharu, and the Silver Lion in 1953 for Ugetsu and again in 1954 for Sansho the Bailiff. These three consecutive Venice awards established his international reputation.
