Steven Spielberg's 1993 blockbuster Jurassic Park changed the way audiences saw dinosaurs on screen. Based on Michael Crichton's novel, the film combined groundbreaking computer-generated imagery with life-sized animatronics to create creatures that felt terrifyingly real. Set on the fictional Isla Nublar, the story follows a group of experts invited to evaluate a theme park populated by cloned dinosaurs. What begins as a wonder-filled tour turns into a fight for survival when the park's security systems fail.

The film was a massive undertaking, with a budget of $63 million. It was shot on location in Kauai, Hawaii, where Hurricane Iniki destroyed sets and caused a two-week delay. Industrial Light & Magic handled the CGI, while Stan Winston's team built a 20-foot-tall T. rex animatronic that weighed 13,000 pounds. John Williams composed the iconic score, writing the main theme in a single night after Spielberg requested something grand and majestic.

Upon release, Jurassic Park earned over $1 billion worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing film at the time. It won three Academy Awards for visual effects, sound, and sound effects editing. The film's blend of scientific wonder and ethical questions about genetic engineering sparked global conversations and a renewed interest in paleontology. The film opens at a dinosaur dig in Montana, where paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant and paleobotanist Dr. Ellie Sattler are unearthing fossils. They receive an unexpected visit from lawyer Donald Gennaro, who invites them to consult on a mysterious project. Meanwhile, in Costa Rica, a worker at a dig site is attacked by an unseen creature, hinting at the dangers ahead.

Grant and Sattler are flown to the island of Isla Nublar, where they meet eccentric billionaire John Hammond. He reveals that his company, InGen, has cloned dinosaurs by extracting DNA from mosquitoes preserved in amber. The island is home to a theme park called Jurassic Park, and Hammond wants the experts to endorse its safety. Also present is mathematician Ian Malcolm, a chaos theorist who immediately expresses skepticism about the park's stability.

The group tours the park in electric jeeps, marveling at a Brachiosaurus and other herbivores. But Malcolm warns that complex systems like the park's are inherently unpredictable. In the control room, chief programmer Dennis Nedry is secretly plotting to steal dinosaur embryos for a rival company. He disables the park's security systems, causing the electric fences to fail. The tour is interrupted when the Tyrannosaurus rex breaks out of its enclosure during a thunderstorm, attacking the vehicles. Grant, Hammond's grandchildren Lex and Tim, and Malcolm are separated. Grant ends up stranded in the jungle with the children, using his knowledge of dinosaur behavior to survive. Meanwhile, Sattler, Malcolm, and game warden Robert Muldoon head to the maintenance shed to restore power.

As Nedry attempts to escape with the embryos, he gets lost in the storm and is killed by a Dilophosaurus. The park's systems remain down, and the group discovers that the Velociraptors have also escaped their paddock. Muldoon is killed while hunting the raptors. The survivors, including Grant and the children, make their way to the visitor center. They manage to reboot the system, but the raptors enter the building.
