Josef Mengele

There is nothing to celebrate here, and the honest thing is to say so plainly. Josef Mengele received wartime decorations as an SS medical officer, and that is the entire list. He won no civilian awards, no professional honours, no lifetime achievement recognition and no peer distinctions. His name does not appear in any hall of fame, and no institution has ever seen fit to recognize him for anything. The only records attached to him are records of harm: the survivor testimony, the forensic identification of his remains in 1985, and the archival files that governments spent decades keeping sealed. What makes his case notable is not achievement but the scale of the reckoning it produced, and the fact that the reckoning is still going on more than four decades after his death.
