John Stuart Mill stands as the most influential English-speaking philosopher of the nineteenth century, according to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. His work On Liberty is consistently ranked among the top 10 most important political texts of all time. He was the second person in British history to formally demand women's suffrage during his campaign, following Henry Hunt in 1832. His Principles of Political Economy was the dominant economics textbook in the English-speaking world for nearly half a century, influencing generations of economists including Alfred Marshall.
