Jean-Jacques Dessalines is recognized as a national hero of Haiti and one of the most significant figures in the African diaspora. He led the only successful slave revolt in history that resulted in the establishment of an independent nation. The Haitian Revolution, under his command, permanently abolished slavery in Haiti, making it the first country in the Americas to do so. His image appears on Haitian currency, and his name is enshrined in the national anthem. The Order of Jean-Jacques Dessalines, Haiti's highest decoration, bears his name.
