Jan Kodeš

Jan Kodeš's place in tennis history is secure. He was one of the few players of his generation to win Grand Slam titles on both clay and grass, and he did so while representing a communist country that offered little support for professional athletes. His three major titles came against some of the toughest competition of the era, and his career-high ranking of No. 5 in September 1973 reflected his consistency across all surfaces. He was a Davis Cup stalwart for Czechoslovakia, playing 94 matches over 15 years, and he was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1990, a fitting honor for a player who achieved so much under difficult circumstances.
