Jaehaerys I Targaryen

Born in 34 AC on Dragonstone, Jaehaerys was the third son of King Aenys I and Queen Alyssa Velaryon. His early years were shadowed by the weak rule of his father and the subsequent tyranny of his uncle, Maegor the Cruel. After Aenys died in 42 AC, Maegor seized the throne and crushed all opposition, forcing Jaehaerys and his mother to flee to the safety of Pentos. They lived in exile until Maegor's death in 48 AC, when Jaehaerys, only fourteen, was summoned back to Westeros. He was crowned at the Starry Sept in Oldtown with the High Septon's blessing, a deliberate gesture to heal the rift between the Crown and the Faith.[edit]

Jaehaerys was patient, shrewd, and deeply pragmatic. He possessed a sharp intellect and a genuine desire to rule justly, often seeking counsel from a wide range of advisors, including lowborn scholars like Septon Barth. He valued law and order above personal glory, preferring diplomacy to warfare. Though capable of sternness, he was known for his accessibility and willingness to listen to petitioners, earning him the love of the smallfolk. In his later years, after the death of Queen Alysanne, he became increasingly reclusive and embittered, delegating much of the governance to his Hand, Otto Hightower.[edit]

Jaehaerys's reign is divided into two halves: the first, a period of vigorous reform and expansion; the second, a slow decline marked by personal tragedy. In the early years, he and Alysanne traveled the Seven Kingdoms, hearing grievances and issuing decrees. They abolished the lord's right to the first night, built the Kingsroad, and established a unified legal code known as the Code of Jaehaerys. The Faith Militant was disbanded through the Doctrine of Exceptionalism, which allowed Targaryen incest while forbidding armed religious orders.

The later decades were darkened by the deaths of his children. His eldest son and heir, Aemon, died in 92 AC; his favorite son, Baelon, followed in 101 AC. The succession crisis that followed forced Jaehaerys to convene the Great Council of 101 AC at Harrenhal, which chose his grandson Viserys over the claims of Laenor Velaryon and Rhaenys Targaryen. The decision, though accepted at the time, sowed resentment that would later ignite the Dance of the Dragons. His reign is romanticized as a golden age of peace and prosperity, a stark contrast to the chaos of the Dance of the Dragons and later Targaryen decline. The Great Council of 101 AC is a pivotal event in House of the Dragon lore, and fans often debate whether his decision to pass over Rhaenys was a prudent compromise or a fatal mistake that led to civil war.
