Jade

Jade is an Edenian, born in the realm of Edenia before it was conquered by the Outworld emperor Shao Kahn. Following the conquest, her family, part of the Edenian nobility, gave her to Shao Kahn as a child tribute in exchange for their own freedom. Raised in Outworld's court, she was trained as an elite assassin and spy, serving alongside Princess Kitana and the clone Mileena as one of Shao Kahn's personal operatives. Despite her servitude, Jade formed a deep bond with Kitana, becoming her closest friend and protector.

For years, Jade carried out covert missions for the emperor, using her stealth and combat skills to eliminate threats and gather intelligence. She was loyal to Kahn out of duty, but her true allegiance always leaned toward Kitana. When Kitana discovered the truth about Edenia's conquest and her own origins, she rebelled against Shao Kahn. Jade was ordered to capture her, but instead chose to defect, siding with Kitana and the fight to liberate Edenia. [edit]

Jade is pragmatic, loyal, and fiercely protective of those she cares about, especially Kitana. She is a stealthy and methodical operative, preferring to work from the shadows and gather information before striking. Despite her cold exterior as an assassin, she possesses a strong moral compass and a deep sense of justice, which ultimately leads her to defy Shao Kahn. In the original timeline, Jade's role evolved from a secret assassin to a key ally of Earthrealm. After defecting from Shao Kahn, she became a general in the Edenian army, defending the realm alongside Kitana and Sindel. She participated in conflicts against Shinnok and later the Battle of Armageddon, where she fought Tanya before the timeline collapsed.

In the rebooted timeline (Mortal Kombat 9 onward), Jade is reintroduced as Kitana's best friend and fellow assassin. She encourages Kitana's doubts about Shao Kahn and supports her rebellion. In Mortal Kombat 11, Jade appears as a revenant serving the Netherrealm before being freed. She also has a past romantic relationship with Kotal Kahn. In Mortal Kombat 1 (2023), she is not directly present but is confirmed to exist in Liu Kang's new era, destined to befriend Kitana once again.[edit]

Jade has become a fan-favorite character since her debut as a secret fighter in Mortal Kombat II. Her mystique, unique projectile immunity, and role as a strong female fighter helped her stand out among the color-coded ninjas. She is frequently cited in discussions of iconic female characters in fighting games, and her green ninja aesthetic has made her a popular choice for cosplay and fan art.
