John Anthony White, born July 9, 1975 in Detroit, stands as one of the most distinct voices in modern rock. Originally playing drums and guitar for local underground groups, he met Meg White in the 1990s to form the White Stripes in 1997. The duo became a defining force of the early 2000s indie scene with their raw sound and minimalist aesthetic. Their breakthrough album White Blood Cells arrived in 2001, launching them into international stardom and cementing their status as leaders of the decade's rock revival alongside three more acclaimed records throughout the 2000s. When the White Stripes disbanded in 2011, White pivoted quickly to solo work and entrepreneurship. He established Third Man Records in 2001 while still part of the duo, creating a hub for analog music production that remains active today. His solo debut Blunderbuss (2012) received strong reviews, followed by Lazaretto in 2014, which shattered vinyl sales records for first-week performance until 2021. He continued this streak with experimental releases like No Name (2024) and Frozen Charlotte (2026), each using unique distribution methods to challenge industry norms. Beyond his own projects, he co-founded the Raconteurs and the Dead Weather, and recorded the James Bond theme "Another Way to Die" with Alicia Keys. His film credits include roles in Cold Mountain, Coffee and Cigarettes, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, and Killers of the Flower Moon. In 2013, the Library of Congress named him to the National Recording Preservation Foundation.
