Itō Hirobumi's achievements are foundational to modern Japan. As the author of the Meiji Constitution, he created the framework for Japan's political system that lasted until 1947. His role as the first Prime Minister set the precedent for the office, and his founding of the Rikken Seiyūkai established the first modern political party in the country. His leadership during the Meiji era helped transform Japan from an isolated feudal society into a global power.
