Bergman's place in cinema history is secured by his three Oscar wins for Best Foreign Language Film, a feat matched by few directors. His 1971 Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award recognized his lifetime of creative work. In 2012, Sight & Sound critics voted him the greatest director of all time, with Persona and Fanny and Alexander both ranking among the top 20 films.
