Indira Gandhi is one of the most awarded Indian political figures. Her Bharat Ratna in 1972 made her the third recipient of India's highest civilian honor, after her father and the former governor-general. The United Nations Peace Prize recognized her role in the creation of Bangladesh and her advocacy for a New International Economic Order. She also received honorary doctorates from several universities, including Oxford and the University of Delhi. Her record as the first and only female prime minister of India remains unbroken, and she consistently ranks among the most influential leaders in Indian history.
