Hou Hsiao-Hsien is one of the most celebrated directors in world cinema, with a Golden Lion and a Cannes Best Director award among his honors. His film A City of Sadness made history as the first Taiwanese film to win the top prize at Venice. He is widely regarded as a master of the long take and a key figure in the Taiwanese New Wave.

AwardsHou won the Golden Lion at Venice for A City of Sadness (1989) and the Best Director award at Cannes for The Assassin (2015). He also received the Cannes Jury Prize for The Puppetmaster (1993) and the International Critic's Prize at Berlin for A Time to Live, a Time to Die (1985).
