The roots of Mbungo Express can be traced back to the Kuomboka Network, a vibrant world music ensemble that captivated audiences throughout the 1980s. However, the Kuomboka Network disbanded in 1987, leading some of its members, including vocalist Sally Swart and composer Erik van der Wurff, to pursue other projects.

In the wake of Kuomboka's dissolution, a new, smaller musical entity began to take shape in Delft, Netherlands. This group, initially known as OK Bungo, coalesced around the creative vision of Alice Wamulume, originally from Zambia, and Theo Jansen, a distinguished visual artist. Together, they embarked on a journey to craft and perform original world music compositions, laying the groundwork for what was to come.

This foundational group eventually evolved into Mbungo Express, officially forming in the Netherlands in 1993. As a direct continuation of the sound pioneered by Kuomboka, founding members Wamulume and Jansen brought together a collective of musicians with the ambitious goal of becoming a significant presence in the Dutch world music scene. The name 'Mbungo,' a word from a Zambian language meaning 'good' or 'nice,' was carefully chosen to reflect the band's inherently optimistic and celebratory musical approach.
