The group has built a significant international following, particularly in Latin America and the United States, evidenced by multiple successful world tours and selling over 30,000 copies of their debut EP.
KARD continues to be active in the music scene, releasing music such as their 2023 EP "ICKY" and engaging in group activities alongside solo projects. Their distinctive sound and the dynamic between their male and female members create a unique appeal, fostering a strong connection with their dedicated fanbase, known as Hidden Kard.
Formation Story
In 2016, DSP Media, a prominent entertainment company based in Seoul, South Korea, known for nurturing successful groups like Sechs Kies and Kara, embarked on a pioneering project: to create a unique co-ed K-pop group. The company meticulously recruited four talented trainees, each bringing distinct skills to the burgeoning lineup. J.Seph joined as a rapper celebrated for his deep vocal tone, alongside BM, a Korean-American dancer and rapper. Somin, a seasoned vocalist, brought experience from training under other agencies, while Jiwoo, the youngest member, completed the quartet as a versatile vocalist and dancer. This carefully curated ensemble, named KARD, officially formed on December 13, 2016, marking the genesis of an innovative pre-debut strategy.
Breaking from conventional debut methods, DSP Media opted for an unusual, staggered rollout of three digital singles over seven months. This strategic approach was designed to allow fans to gradually become acquainted with each member, fostering anticipation and building a dedicated grassroots following before KARD’s official debut. The pre-debut project commenced with the release of "Oh NaNa" in December 2016, which introduced BM, J.Seph, and Somin, notably featuring guest artist Heo Young-ji. The full four-member lineup was unveiled with the subsequent single, "Don't Recall," released in February 2017. The final pre-debut track, "Rumor," followed in April 2017, effectively solidifying the group's dynamic chemistry and unique musical identity.
This innovative pre-debut phase culminated in KARD's highly anticipated official debut on July 19, 2017. The group launched their career with the release of their first extended play (EP), titled Hola Hola, featuring the electrifying title track of the same name. The EP quickly garnered significant attention, selling over 30,000 copies in South Korea and peaking impressively at number 2 on the Gaon Album Chart. The title track, "Hola Hola," achieved a historic milestone by reaching number 1 on Billboard's World Digital Song Sales chart, a groundbreaking accomplishment for a co-ed K-pop group and a testament to KARD's immediate global appeal.

Musical Style
KARD's music blends K-pop with Western genres, creating a sound that feels global. Their early work leaned heavily on tropical house and EDM, with tracks like Oh NaNa and Hola Hola featuring bright synth melodies and heavy bass drops. The You & Me era introduced Latin pop influences, with moombahton rhythms and sensual melodies. Ride on the Wind shifted to upbeat pop with EDM drops. After a hiatus, Red Moon returned to darker, trap-infused territory. By Re: and ICKY, they experimented with Afrobeat and dancehall, as heard in Ring the Alarm and the title track ICKY. Lyrically, the group explores love, desire, and confidence, often with a bold, unapologetic tone. Their production consistently emphasizes contrast: BM and J.Seph's deep raps against Somin and Jiwoo's bright vocals.

Cultural Impact
KARD broke a long-standing taboo in K-pop by succeeding as a co-ed group. At a time when most groups were single-gender, they proved that mixed-gender lineups could work commercially and artistically. Their music's Latin and EDM influences helped them gain traction in markets like Brazil, Mexico, and the United States, where they headlined tours selling tens of thousands of tickets. In 2019, they were appointed honorary ambassadors for the Korean Culture and Information Service, promoting Korean culture abroad. The group also contributed to mental health awareness, participating in UNICEF's Love Myself campaign in 2021. Fashion-wise, their dark streetwear style with leather and bold patterns influenced co-ed group aesthetics in the late 2010s.
Fandom Culture
KARD's fandom is called Hidden KARD, or Hiddens for short. The name was announced at their debut showcase in July 2017. The official lightstick, released in 2018, is a rectangular prism with the group's logo. Fan color is black and white, symbolizing contrast and duality. Hiddens celebrate July 19 as Hidden Day with charity projects and streaming parties. At concerts, they create card-themed banners and perform synchronized fan chants. In 2020, fans raised over $10,000 for UNICEF through a Red Moon project. For the 2022 comeback, they funded a Times Square billboard.
Awards Won (23)
KARD has won 12 awards across major ceremonies. They swept rookie awards in 2018, including Golden Disc Rookie of the Year and Seoul Music Awards Rookie Award. At MAMA, they won Best New Male Group in 2017 and Best Dance Performance – Male Group in 2018. Internationally, they won Best Korean Act at the 2018 MTV Europe Music Awards.
