JUST B was assembled from trainees who had accumulated considerable screen time on survival programs before their debut. DY won first place on MBC's Under Nineteen in 2019 and served as the center of the project group 1the9. Bain also competed on that show, reaching the final. Lim Ji-min appeared on SBS's The Fan and released a solo single album, Mini, in 2019. Geonu and Siwoo participated in Mnet's I-Land in 2020, though both were eliminated before the final lineup. These five, along with Sangwoo, were brought together under Bluedot Entertainment after the agency acquired trainees from Play M Entertainment.

The group's debut EP Just Burn arrived on June 30, 2021, with the single "Damage" produced by Bang Yong-guk. The song's aggressive hip-hop sound and sharp choreography established JUST B as a performance-focused group.
