Gohan is the firstborn son of Son Goku and Chi-Chi, named after Goku's adoptive grandfather. His earliest years were peaceful, with Chi-Chi determined to raise him as a scholar far from the world of martial arts. That changed when his uncle Raditz arrived on Earth, kidnapping the four-year-old Gohan. Trapped in a space pod, Gohan's rage erupted for the first time, releasing a burst of power that injured Raditz and alerted Piccolo to the boy's latent potential.

After Raditz's defeat, Piccolo took Gohan into a wasteland for a year of brutal survival training.
