Records
Garrincha's place in football history is defined by two moments: the 1958 and 1962 World Cups. In 1962, with Pele sidelined, he delivered one of the greatest individual tournament performances ever, winning both the Golden Ball and the Golden Boot. That feat alone places him among the sport's elite. He is consistently ranked as Brazil's second-greatest player behind Pele, and in 1999 World Soccer magazine placed him 20th on its list of the 100 Greatest Players of the 20th Century. The IFFHS named him the second-best Brazilian and eighth-best South American of the 20th century. His legacy lives on in the Brasilia stadium that bears his name and in the hearts of Botafogo fans, who still sing his chants.
