    Overview

Onimusha (鬼武者, meaning "Oni Warrior") is a series of action-adventure games developed and published by Capcom, created by Yoshiki Okamoto. The franchise blends historical Japanese figures with supernatural horror, retelling stories of samurai and warlords as they battle the Genma, a race of demonic invaders. Players wield the power of the Oni through a mystical gauntlet, enabling them to absorb souls and unleash devastating attacks. The series is known for its third-person hack-and-slash combat, puzzle-solving, and fixed camera angles inspired by Capcom's Resident Evil. As of December 31, 2025, the franchise has sold 9 million copies worldwide, making it Capcom's tenth best-selling series.

The first game, Onimusha: Warlords, launched on PlayStation 2 in January 2001 and was the first PS2 title to sell over 1 million copies. It featured actor Takeshi Kaneshiro as the protagonist, with pioneering facial and performance capture. Sequels followed: Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny (2002) starring Jubei Yagyu, Onimusha 3: Demon Siege (2004) which introduced time travel between feudal Japan and modern Paris, and Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams (2006) set years later. A high-definition remaster of Warlords released in December 2018 for Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and Windows, followed by an HD remaster of Onimusha 2 in May 2025. The upcoming Onimusha: Way of the Sword (September 25, 2026) will feature Miyamoto Musashi, digitally recreated from the late actor Toshiro Mifune, and is built on Capcom's RE Engine.

    Gameplay

Onimusha centers on third-person combat where the protagonist uses the Oni Gauntlet to absorb enemy souls, which power up weapons and abilities. The signature mechanic is the Issen, a perfectly timed counter-attack that instantly kills weaker enemies. Players explore environments, solve puzzles, and collect items to progress. Fixed camera angles provide dramatic views, while later entries introduced more dynamic cameras. The upcoming Way of the Sword adds environmental destruction, with boss attacks splitting the ground, and the Nintendo Switch 2 version supports Joy-Con 2 motion controls for attacks and aiming.

    Story

The series reimagines Japanese history with demonic interference. In Onimusha: Warlords, samurai Samanosuke Akechi rescues Princess Yuki from the Genma warlord Nobunaga Oda. Onimusha 2 follows Jubei Yagyu seeking revenge against Nobunaga. Onimusha 3 crosses time and space as samurai Jacques Blanc and modern-day French policeman Jean Reno team up. Dawn of Dreams introduces Soki, a young hero with Oni powers, fighting a new Genma threat. Way of the Sword is set in early Edo-period Kyoto, where Miyamoto Musashi wields the Oni Gauntlet to stop immortal demons spawned by "Malice."
