Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny
"Jubei Yagyu returns to fight the demon warlord Nobunaga Oda in a tale of revenge and ancient magic."
Overview
March 7, 2002 marked the arrival of Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny on PlayStation 2, pushing Capcom's dark fantasy franchise into deeper territory. Players control Jubei Yagyu as he hunts Nobunaga Oda after the warlord destroys his clan. The story splits into four distinct paths depending on which sub-character you recruit early in the game. These allies, Soki, Kanbe, Rimi, or Shiro, bring their own cutscenes and motivations that flesh out the world without changing the final battle.
Critics praised the soundtrack by Taro Iwashiro and the atmosphere, though some felt the role-playing elements faded after the halfway point. The American release dropped the Japanese audio option entirely, a detail that frustrated fans who preferred the original language track. Despite these quirks, the game established itself as a strong contender in the action genre with its blend of historical fiction and supernatural horror.
Gameplay
Swords clash against demons in fast-paced combat where timing is everything. You harvest souls from fallen enemies to upgrade weapons and unlock new abilities like the critical counter known as issen. This mechanic lets you deliver a devastating blow if you strike at the exact moment an enemy attacks. The game also introduced a branching narrative structure where your choice of ally determines which side stories unfold during specific chapters.
Story
Jubei Yagyu wakes up in a ruined village only to find his family slaughtered by Nobunaga Oda's demonic forces. He vows to stop the warlord before he unleashes chaos across Japan. Along the way, players encounter spirits and ancient artifacts that hint at a larger conspiracy involving the Oni tribe. The narrative expands beyond simple revenge as Jubei learns about the balance between the human and spirit worlds.
