    Overview

Diablo is a landmark action role-playing dungeon crawler series that defined the hack-and-slash ARPG genre. Originating in 1996 from Blizzard North (founded as Condor Games), the franchise has sold over 30 million copies across four mainline entries. The series is known for its procedurally generated dungeons, deep loot systems, and fast-paced real-time combat viewed from an isometric perspective.

The overarching story pits the mortal realm of Sanctuary against the eternal conflict between the High Heavens and the Burning Hells. The first game follows a hero descending into Tristram Cathedral to stop Diablo, the Lord of Terror. Diablo II expands the journey across five acts to pursue the Prime Evils Diablo, Mephisto, and Baal. Diablo III introduces the Nephalem, descendants of angels and demons, who battle Diablo's resurrection as the Prime Evil. Diablo IV takes place 50 years later, with Lilith, daughter of Mephisto, returning to claim dominion over Sanctuary.

Each installment evolved gameplay: the original offered three classes (Warrior, Rogue, Sorcerer), Diablo II introduced five classes with two skill trees each, Diablo III added resource systems and removed permanent stat allocation, and Diablo IV returned to skill trees with over 150 nodes per class. Multiplayer has been integral since the start, supporting up to 4 players in Diablo, 8 in Diablo II, and 4-player parties with a shared open world in Diablo IV. The series has inspired countless other titles, including Path of Exile and Torchlight, and maintains an active modding and speedrunning community.

    Gameplay

Core gameplay revolves around exploring randomly generated dungeons, defeating hordes of monsters, collecting loot, and leveling up characters. Combat is real-time with an isometric perspective, emphasizing fast-paced clicking and ability management. Loot rarity scales from common to legendary and unique tiers, and character progression involves skill trees and attribute points.

Diablo (1996) offered three classes with basic skill trees. Diablo II (2000) expanded to five classes, each with two unique skill trees, and introduced rune words and mercenaries. Diablo III (2012) simplified progression with six classes, resource systems like Fury and Arcane Power, and no permanent stat allocation. Diablo IV (2023) returned to deep customization with 150+ skill nodes per class and a Paragon board for endgame.

Multiplayer features have grown from 4-player LAN in the original to 8-player games in Diablo II, 4-player cooperative in Diablo III, and a shared open world in Diablo IV with up to 10 players visible, 4-player parties for dungeons, and 8-player PvP zones called Fields of Hatred. Cross-play is supported across all platforms in Diablo IV.

    Story

The series begins in the kingdom of Khanduras, where the hero descends into the labyrinth beneath Tristram Cathedral to defeat Diablo. In a tragic twist, the hero imprisons Diablo within their own soul, becoming the Dark Wanderer. Diablo II follows this wanderer as he releases Diablo's brothers Mephisto and Baal across five acts, culminating in Baal's corruption of Mount Arreat and the destruction of the Worldstone.

Diablo III introduces the Nephalem, the offspring of angels and demons, who rise to stop Diablo's resurrection as the Prime Evil. The expansion Reaper of Souls deals with the angel of death, Malthael, who seeks to destroy all demonic influence. Diablo IV takes place 50 years later, with Lilith, daughter of Mephisto, returning to Sanctuary. The player must unite the scattered factions of humanity to prevent her from claiming dominion over the mortal world.
