Diablo II
"The Lord of Terror returns in a dark fantasy action RPG."
Overview
Blizzard North released Diablo II on June 28, 2000, refining the hack and slash formula established by its predecessor. Players take on the role of one of seven distinct heroes to traverse four acts across the lands of Sanctuary. The story picks up immediately after the first game, where the Prime Evil Diablo has been resurrected by Mephisto and Baal. You must stop them from destroying the world while exploring grim dungeons and interacting with characters like Deckard Cain.
The game introduced deep character progression through skill trees, allowing players to specialize their builds rather than relying solely on attribute points. Real-time combat and randomized loot kept the gameplay engaging for hundreds of hours. Battle.net facilitated extensive multiplayer support, letting up to eight players team up or engage in player-versus-player duels across different regions.
An expansion pack titled Diablo II: Lord of Destruction arrived in June 2001, adding two new classes and higher difficulty levels. Decades later, Diablo II: Resurrected launched in September 2021 to update the graphics while preserving the original experience. Recent updates in 2026 include Season 15 content and the Reign of the Warlock DLC, which introduces a new playable class.
Gameplay
Combat happens in real time as you defeat hordes of monsters to gain experience and level up your character. A key innovation was the introduction of skill trees, which let you customize your hero into specific builds instead of just dumping points into attributes. Loot drops feature randomized properties, creating endless variety in gear acquisition. The game also popularized competitive seasonal servers known as ladders, where players compete for high scores and exclusive rewards.
Multiplayer features were extensive at launch, supporting up to eight players in cooperative play through Battle.net. This infrastructure allowed for cross-regional connectivity that was rare for the time. Modern iterations like Resurrected continue this legacy with updated matchmaking systems and seasonal events that keep the community active years after the original release.
Story
The narrative begins shortly after the events of the first game, where the fallen angel Mephisto and the demon Baal have resurrected the Prime Evil Diablo. You play as one of seven heroes, the Amazon, Sorceress, Necromancer, Paladin, Barbarian, Druid, or Assassin, to stop the Lord of Terror and his brothers from destroying Sanctuary. The journey takes you through four sprawling acts filled with dangerous monsters and intricate lore.
Memorable characters guide your path, most notably Deckard Cain, who serves as a mentor throughout the quest. The atmosphere remains grim and atmospheric, defined by detailed sprite work and dynamic lighting effects that set the tone for early 2000s gaming. The climax involves a final confrontation with the Prime Evil, resolving the threat of the three brothers once and for all.
