Edmund Barton's achievements are foundational to Australia as a nation. As the first prime minister, he led the country through its early years, establishing key institutions like the Australian Defence Force and the Commonwealth Public Service. His role in drafting the Australian Constitution and then interpreting it as a High Court justice is a unique dual legacy. He was honoured with a knighthood and the Order of the Rising Sun, and his memory is preserved through the Barton electorate and ongoing national commemorations.

AwardsEdmund Barton received a knighthood in 1902, and was also decorated with the Japanese Grand Cordon, Order of the Rising Sun. In July 1922, the federal Parliament honoured him by naming the electorate of Barton after him. On 9 May 1951, the 50th anniversary of the opening of federal Parliament, an 88-year-old Billy Hughes laid a wreath on Barton's grave, paying tribute to his memory. The first biography of Barton was published in 1948 by John Reynolds, with a foreword by Sir Robert Menzies.
