Denis Villeneuve's second installment in his adaptation of Frank Herbert's 1965 novel picks up where the first film left off, with Paul Atreides and his mother Lady Jessica seeking refuge among the Fremen of Arrakis. The film expands the world of the first movie considerably, introducing new factions and characters while deepening the political and religious tensions that drive the narrative. At a reported budget of $190 million, the production shot across Jordan, Abu Dhabi, Hungary, Italy, and Norway, with principal photography running from July to December 2022.

Released in February 2024, the film grossed over $714 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing release of the year at the time. Critics praised the performances of Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, and Austin Butler, as well as Greig Fraser's cinematography and Hans Zimmer's score. Paul Atreides and his mother Lady Jessica, having survived the Harkonnen attack on House Atreides, are taken in by the Fremen of Sietch Tabr. Stilgar, the settlement's leader, sees Paul as the prophesied Lisan al-Gaib, a messianic figure who will lead the Fremen to freedom. Paul is less certain of his destiny, haunted by visions of a galaxy-spanning holy war that would be fought in his name. He trains alongside the Fremen, learning their ways and mastering the desert survival techniques that have kept them alive for generations.

Chani, a young Fremen woman, initially distrusts Paul, viewing him as another outsider who will bring destruction to her people. Over time, she comes to respect his combat skills and his growing understanding of their culture. Paul proves himself by learning to ride a sandworm, a rite of passage that cements his place among the Fremen. Meanwhile, Lady Jessica undergoes the spice agony, a ritual that transforms her into a Reverend Mother and grants her access to ancestral memories. The transformation deepens the religious fervor surrounding Paul, as the Fremen interpret her survival as a sign of the prophecy's truth.

The Harkonnens, under Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, struggle to maintain control over Arrakis as Fremen raids disrupt spice production. The Baron summons his nephew Feyd-Rautha, a ruthless and cunning warrior, to replace the ineffective Beast Rabban. Feyd-Rautha proves a formidable opponent, quickly reasserting Harkonnen dominance through brutal tactics. The Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV grows concerned about the instability on Arrakis and the potential threat to the spice trade, which underpins the entire Imperium. His daughter, Princess Irulan, documents the events unfolding on the desert planet, aware that the political balance of the universe hangs in the balance.

Paul's military acumen becomes evident as he leads increasingly bold attacks on Harkonnen spice harvesters. These raids cripple the Harkonnen economy and force the Emperor to intervene personally, bringing his elite Sardaukar troops to Arrakis. The Bene Gesserit, the Guild, and the Great Houses watch with growing alarm as Paul's legend spreads across the known universe. Paul struggles with the weight of the prophecy, aware that embracing the role of messiah will lead to the violent jihad he sees in his visions. The film builds toward a confrontation between the Fremen, the Harkonnens, and the Imperial forces, with Paul facing a choice that will determine the fate of billions.[edit]
