    Overview

In 1994, the Farrelly brothers unleashed a comedy that would define a generation of juvenile humor. Dumb and Dumber stars Jim Carrey as Lloyd Christmas, a blissfully clueless limo driver, and Jeff Daniels as Harry Dunne, his equally dim-witted best friend and unemployed dog groomer. The film follows their cross-country road trip from Providence, Rhode Island, to Aspen, Colorado, to return a briefcase they believe belongs to a beautiful woman named Mary Swanson. What they don't know is that the briefcase contains $300,000 in ransom money, and a group of dangerous criminals is hot on their trail.

Made on a modest $16 million budget, the film became a massive commercial success, grossing over $247 million worldwide. It cemented Carrey's status as a box office powerhouse and showcased Daniels' surprising comedic range. Despite mixed reviews from critics at the time, the film has since become a cult classic, praised for its fearless physical comedy and the undeniable chemistry between its leads.

The film's influence extends far beyond its box office numbers. Lines like "So you're telling me there's a chance" and the image of the shaggy Mutt Cutts van have become ingrained in pop culture. Todd Rundgren's whimsical score and a soundtrack featuring Crash Test Dummies' "The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead" perfectly complement the film's anarchic spirit.

Lloyd Christmas works as a limousine driver in Providence, Rhode Island. He picks up a beautiful, wealthy woman named Mary Swanson at the airport and drives her to the train station. Smitten immediately, Lloyd tries to make conversation but only comes across as awkward and foolish. As Mary rushes to catch her train, she accidentally leaves behind a briefcase at the terminal. Lloyd discovers it and, believing it's his chance to win her heart, decides to return it to her.

He convinces his best friend and roommate, Harry Dunne, a recently fired dog groomer, to join him on a cross-country road trip to Aspen, Colorado, where Mary is headed. Neither man realizes the briefcase contains $300,000 in ransom money intended for kidnappers holding Mary's husband. The criminals, led by Nicholas Andre and his henchman Joe Mentaliano, are desperate to recover the money and have hired a hitman to track down whoever took it.

The duo sets off in Harry's iconic 1984 Mutt Cutts van, a shaggy dog-themed vehicle with a giant bone on top. Their journey is a series of absurd misadventures. They accidentally incapacitate a state trooper with a laxative-laced hamburger. They get into a confrontation with a menacing truck driver after Lloyd makes a crude gesture. They run out of money and food, leading to the famous line: "We got no food, we got no jobs, our pets' heads are falling off!"

After selling the van and buying child-sized scooters, they finally reach Aspen. Using some of the ransom money, they check into the luxurious Hotel Jerome and buy flashy ski outfits. Lloyd pursues Mary aggressively, showing up at her charity gala and making a fool of himself. Harry also becomes smitten with Mary, creating a romantic rivalry between the two friends. Meanwhile, the criminals close in, setting the stage for a climactic confrontation where the briefcase, the police, and the bumbling duo all converge.
