Denji

Denji is the central character of Tatsuki Fujimoto's manga Chainsaw Man. A teenage boy living in a world plagued by devils, he gains the ability to transform into the hybrid Chainsaw Man after a near-death incident. His pet devil Pochita, a small chainsaw-wielding creature, merges with his heart, allowing Denji to sprout blades from his head and arms by pulling a cord on his chest. Hired by the Public Safety Devil Hunters, Denji works under the enigmatic Makima alongside eccentric colleagues like Aki Hayakawa and Power. Their mission: track down and eliminate the powerful Gun Devil. But Denji has simpler dreams, like touching a girl's chest or eating jam toast. The series blends horror, action, and dark comedy, with a tone that shifts from visceral violence to absurd humor. Denji was born to a poor family and lost his father at a young age, inheriting a massive debt owed to the yakuza. To survive, he sold his own organs, a kidney, an eye, and a testicle, and hunted devils for the yakuza using his pet devil Pochita, who could transform into a chainsaw. Denji and Pochita lived in a shack, barely scraping by on meager earnings. The yakuza eventually betrayed him, making a contract with the Zombie Devil and killing Denji. As his dismembered body lay in a dumpster, Pochita fused with his heart, forming a contract: Pochita would give Denji his power in exchange for seeing Denji's dreams come true. Denji revived as a devil-human hybrid, able to pull a cord from his chest to become Chainsaw Man. He slaughtered the zombies and was discovered by Makima, who recruited him into Public Safety. Denji is crude, impulsive, and driven by base desires, food, sex, and comfort, stemming from a childhood of extreme deprivation. He lacks social graces and education, often acting on instinct. Despite this, he shows genuine loyalty and care for those who treat him well, especially Pochita, Aki, and Power. His worldview is pragmatic and survival-oriented, but he gradually develops emotional depth, grappling with grief, trust, and the meaning of a normal life. Denji's journey begins with a simple goal: live comfortably and experience the pleasures he was denied. After joining Public Safety, he forms a found family with Aki Hayakawa and Power, living together and learning to value companionship. He faces increasingly powerful devils, including the Eternity Devil, whom he fights for three days straight, and the Katana Man. His relationship with Makima, who manipulates him as a pet, unravels when she reveals herself as the Control Devil and orchestrates the deaths of Aki and Power. Devastated, Denji kills Makima in a brutal confrontation, eating her body to prevent regeneration. He then adopts Nayuta, Makima's reincarnation, as his sister.
