    Overview

The d'Artagnan Romances form a celebrated trilogy of historical adventure novels by the French author Alexandre Dumas, chronicling the exploits of the fictionalized musketeer Charles de Batz-Castelmore d'Artagnan. The core sequence begins with The Three Musketeers, serialized in Le Siècle from March to July 1844 before its book publication later that year. This initial success was followed by Twenty Years After in 1845 and concluded with the extensive The Vicomte de Bragelonne, which ran as a serial between 1847 and 1850. While the term strictly defines these three works, collectors often include related novels like Louise de la Vallière or La Dame de Monsoreau in broader editions.

Dumas constructed the narrative around real historical figures such as King Louis XIII, Cardinal Richelieu, and Queen Anne of Austria, blending documented events with invented drama. The story follows young d'Artagnan's journey from Gascony to Paris, where he bonds with the veteran musketeers Athos, Porthos, and Aramis. Their alliance is defined by the motto "All for One, One for All" as they navigate political conspiracies, duels, and espionage. The final installment introduces the enigmatic Man in the Iron Mask, revealing him to be the secret twin brother of Louis XIV, a plot point that has driven numerous film adaptations including the 1998 release starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

Although the character was inspired by the actual captain of the Musketeers, Charles de Batz-Castelmore d'Artagnan (c. 1611–1673), Dumas relied heavily on the semi-fictional memoirs of Gatien de Courtilz de Sandras published in 1700. These sources provided the colorful anecdotes that allowed Dumas to create an enduring mythos rather than a strict biography. The series explores themes of loyalty, social mobility, and the tension between personal honor and statecraft, cementing its status as one of the most widely read French literary works globally.
